  1. Primary Mac: This is the main Mac you will be using — the host Mac from which all of your programs and windows will be projected. The Primary Mac requires macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later.
  2. Secondary Mac: This will be your extended display — the receiving Mac onto which you may drag any of your program windows. The Secondary Mac requires macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later.
  3. A reliable network connection: Mac-to-Mac Mode will work whether you are working wirelessly via WiFi or tethered to your router.

How to Connect

  1. Make sure both Macs are securely connected to the same reliable network.
    1. If the Macs are using different internet connections, they will not be able to find each other.
    2. You may connect via WiFi or with an ethernet cable.
  2. Open up the regular Luna Display Mac app on whichever Mac you have chosen to be your Primary Mac.
    1. If you're running macOS Mojave or later, you may be asked to change your Accessibility settings under Security & Privacy. You only need to do this once. Every time afterward, the app will load to the Luna Display Home screen.

  3. Open up the Luna Display Secondary Mac App on your Secondary Mac
  4. When both apps are open and the computers are connected to the same network, your Macs should automatically connect! If the Macs do not automatically connect or you have selected Wi-Fi Manual Connect, skip to the next section: Using Wi-Fi Manual Connect.
  5. Voilà! You are connected! Have fun :)

Using Wi-Fi Manual Connect

  1. Select Wi-Fi Manual Connect on both the Primary and Secondary Luna Display Mac App
  2. A code will appear in the app on your Primary Mac

  3. The same code will appear in the app on the Secondary Mac with a few digits missing
  4. Enter the last few digits of the code from the Primary Mac into the Secondary Mac to complete the number sequence so that they are matching
  5. Press Connect in the app on your Secondary Mac. Have fun!

Please note, at this time, Luna Display supports the iMac as a non-Retina display when using Mac-to-Mac mode. Also, if you have a newer M1 Mac with Apple Silicon, there are some limitations on the number of external displays allowed. Feel free to check Apple's device technical specifications to see what is compatible with your machine.

What you will need to use Astropad Studio

  • Mac with OS 10.11 or later
  • iPad Mini 2 (2013+), iPad Pro (2016+), iPad 5th generation (2017+), or iPad Air (2013+) or later with iOS 9.1 or later
  • Apple Pencil
  • Creative software on your Mac

For input and drawing, you can use your finger along with Apple Pencil.
Mac and iPad Pro will be connect by either USB cable or wirelessly with Wifi.

Downloading and Installing Apps

STEP 1: iPad App

Astropad Studio’s iPad app can be purchased on your iPad through the App Store. If you are using your Mac to purchase, go to the App Store through iTunes.

– Install on your iPad.

STEP 2: Mac Companion App

After purchasing the iPad App, go to Astropad.com, to download the free Mac companion app. Go to “iPad”, click “Get It” and the Mac icon, or go directly to our Downloads page — Download the .zip file to your Mac.

– Extract the .zip file, and save the Mac app in “Applications”, or a location easy to find.

*For conveniency, you can keep the Mac App in your dock. Click and hold on the Astropad icon, and go up to “Options”, then select “Keep in Dock”.

STEP 3: Opening Both Apps

On your Mac, open Astropad Mac App.

– Click “Setup”


On your iPad, open Astropad iPad App.
– Tap “Get Started”


After finalizing your payment setup and user account, go back to your Mac, and click “Next”.

If you are running Mac OS Mojave

Unlike other Mac OS versions, you will need to enable Accessibility to use Astropad Studio. There will be a message that prompts during initial setup, with steps to Enable Accessibility from your Mac’s Systems Preferences.


You can also activate this manually by going to System Preferences, Security & Privacy, under the Privacy tab. There, check the box next to Astropad Studio’s icon. If you don’t see Astropad Studio’s icon available, click the “+” button and directly add the Application.


If you experience no pressure sensitivity with drawing / input, you may need to check whether the accompanied creative software in use requires this or a similar permissions under the Privacy tab.

If you are running Mac OS Catalina

Along with the enable Accessibility that was introduced with Mac OS Mojave, a new permissions has been added. “Allow Screen Recording” needs to be enabled to allow Astropad Studio to access the content on your screen. Astropad Studio does not record the contents of your screen.

There will be a message that prompts during initial setup, with detailed steps to Enable this from your Mac’s Systems Preferences.


You can also activate this manually by going to System Preferences, Security & Privacy, under the Privacy tab. There, scroll for “Screen Recording” and check the box next to Astropad Studio’s icon.

User Account

To use Astropad Studio you will need to make a user account. Creating a user account is easy, by entering your email and making a password. Your user license for Astropad Studio will be tied to this account.

To enter Studio, log in to your user account through your iPad.


Forgot your Password?

No worries! If you ever forget your account password, it can always be reset. At the login screen, click “Forgot your password?” in the upper right corner.

Next, enter your email tied to your user account, and click “Reset Password”. If the correct email was used, a confirmation will arrive in your inbox.

USB and Wireless Connection:

To use Astropad Studio, your iPad Pro and Mac need to be connected, by either USB or Wi-Fi.

Using your Lightning to USB, connect iPad Pro to your Mac.

To connect by Wi-Fi:

Make sure both Mac and iPad are on the same wireless network. If iPad and Mac are on the same network with a good signal, they will connect automatically.

Astropad For Mac

At the connection screen, click “Connect info” and a new window is shown with connection options. Click “Wi-Fi Manual Connect, and a QR code opens on your Mac’s screen for your iPad to scan.

Take your iPad, making sure the Camera is “Enabled” for Astropad Studio, and allow it to scan the QR code. It will disappear entirely when you’re connected.
