Not only that, it can be extremely handy to have this type of software installed. How many times have you seen an Android-only app that you’re unable to use due to only owning an Apple device?

Here’s how an emulator works: it partitions part of your computer’s memory and uses it to create a working environment for otherwise incompatible apps. Essentially, you’re taking a portion of your computer’s resources and “tricking” them into behaving like legitimate Android environment.

Of course, there are plenty of Android emulators available online that might serve your purposes. Finding one that’s compatible with Mac computers isn’t even that difficult, given their popularity. We’ll briefly look over a few of my recommendations, and shed some light on what makes them good choices.

1. Whenever we talk about Android emulators, Andyroid is my first pick. It’s my standalone A-team that I use more than any other software, and it works just as well on the Mac as it does on the PC. It’s lightweight and can handle virtually any Android app that you throw at it. On top of that, it never takes long for Andyroid to update to the newest version of the Android OS as Google releases it across their mobile devices. Want to do one better? You can tether your mobile device to your Mac via Bluetooth and use it as a controller for the emulator. Pretty handy when you’re going to use a streaming app, no?
2. Bluestacks is the charmer of the bunch, with bright vibrant marketing that has successfully garnered it almost as much attention as an actual Android device might. Not that it doesn’t deserve that flash; this is an incredibly well-designed emulator that will certainly handle Bluestacks for you. It’s free to download and use, but if you want to remove the third-party software ad support, you’ll need to pay a slim, monthly subscription fee.
3. Genymotion makes it onto my recommended emulator list for a few reasons, this time. Firstly, it runs excellent on Mac, and you’ll have just as great of a time with this software as you will with any other emulation suite. Secondly, it bumped off my usual third recommendation (browser-based Manymo) because it’s actual software that you install on your computer. Since we’re preparing specifically to use ShowBox, you’ll want an emulator that’s capable of performing long bouts of content streaming. The browser-based emulators don’t provide a long enough window of time for most content that you’ll be viewing.

Once you’ve managed to get ahold of a suitable emulator (don’t feel the need to spend too long choosing), you’ll have everything you need to get started on ShowBox. Simply boot up your emulator, and load in your custom .apk application.

As you’ll see upon first loading the app, ShowBox is surprisingly intuitive for an app with such a shady reputation surrounding it. Regardless of that ambiguous shadow cast by the app, navigating its interface in order to sift through the various films and television programs it offers is a simple thing. During your time spent with ShowBox, you may notice that certain media becomes inaccessible. Because much of this content is being hosted on servers distant from the US (but no less legally), it will occasionally be taken down and have to be rehosted before you’ll have access to it once again.
